Things to do and places to visit on the Isle of Mull Wildlife
Otters close to the farm
Otter picure taken by a guest, Simon Rowlands, a short distance from Gruline Home Farm.

On and around the Isle of Mull wildlife abounds.  Passing through the Farm itself you are likely to see Red and Fallow deer, White-tailed Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles, Buzzards and many more species of birds.  Occasionally you may see Otters and Polecats.  There are plenty of Grey and Common Seals around the shores and Minke Whale, Dolphins, Porpoises and Basking Shark are regular visitors to the waters around Mull.  There are very successful whale watching trips from Tobermory.

Fishing There is fishing available for salmon, sea trout, rainbow trout and many lochs with native brown trout throughout the island and sea fishing trips from Tobermory can be arranged where anglers can pitt their skill and strength against the Common Skate of around 200 lbs have been caught.

Castles Duart Castle - ( the one that you pass on the ferry if you travel from Oban)  3 miles South of Craigniure is the 12th century home of the MacLean clan and the teashop serves home-made cakes.
Torosay Castle -   A 'Victorian' castle that is extremely pretty and has beautiful gardens.  Well worth a visit, particularly if its raining, as you can wander around the house, sit in its library, read the books and learn of the families history.  Excellent teas and light snacks are available.
Moy Castle - Lochbuie, the acestral home of the MacLane clan, now a photogenic ruined tower sitting right on the foreshore.

Islands Staffa - The world renown island of Staffa with its main attraction of Fingals Cave is just off the shore of Mull, quite close to Gruline Home Farm as the crow flies, and there are boat trips from Ulva Ferry and Iona when, weather permitting, a landing can be made.
Treshnish Islands - A collection of small uninhabited islands which are all part of a bird sancturary and a trip to the largest, Lunga, is often incorporated into the trip to Fingals Cave.  In May, June and July the islands are packed with thousands of Puffin, Guillemot, Razorbill and many other kinds of sea birds.

Walks Ben More (3164ft) - rising from the shore of Loch na Keal Ben More is the only Monro (a peak over 300ft) not on the mainland with the exception of the mountains on Skye and is well worth the walk.

The Fossil Tree at Burg - A fossilised impression of a 60,000,000 year old tree, 40ft tall with a diameter of 3ft.  A strenous walk of some 14 miles (return) but worth it if you are fit enough.

There are many more walks catering for all tastes and abilities these two happen to be my favourites.  There are plenty of books around the house with these and many other walks described.

How to get here. A regular car ferry operates from Oban to Craignure, a non-bookable ferry from Lochaline to Fishnish and also a non-bookable ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory.  All these ferries are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne
